PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana: PM Kisan is a Central Sector Scheme that provides income support to all landholder farmer families in the country to meet their financial needs for procurement of various inputs related to agriculture and allied activities as well as household needs. Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme
Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-Kisan Yojana) is a scheme launched by the Government of India which aims to provide minimum income support up to Rs. 6000 to all small and marginal farmers per year.
The PM-Kisan Yojana scheme provides financial benefits of Rs. 6000 per annum to the families of all landholding farmers. This amount is payable in three equal instalments of Rs. 2000 every four months.

The objective of PM Kisan Yojana
Agriculture is an important part of India’s economy, and farmers are one of the major sections of society. However, due to the prevailing socio-economic disparities between urban and rural areas in the country, farming communities have often struggled for financial prosperity. This issue has affected a significant portion of India’s population since independence.
The Central and State Governments have continuously tried to address this social and economic concern through several initiatives to uplift such communities. PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana was launched by the Government of India in 2018 to help these communities.
The Government of India released the sixth instalment on 9 August 2020 under this scheme to about 8.5 crore farmers. As per its objectives, the initiative aims to benefit around 125 million farmers in India, especially those of marginal or small stature.

How effective was the plan?
In 2018, the Telangana government launched the Ryuthu Bandhu scheme. Under this initiative, the state government disburses a fixed amount twice a year to increase the investment of the farmer in agriculture. The initiative was widely recognized and appreciated for its direct benefits to the farmers.
Following suit, the Government of India launched a Uniform Farmers Investment Assistance Scheme to provide financial assistance to farmers nationwide. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana came into force on 1 December 2018. As per the initial announcement of the government, this scheme will be allocated Rs 75000 crore per year.

What are the features of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?
Some of the key features of this scheme are discussed in the points given below:
Income Support
The primary feature of this scheme is the minimum income support provided to the farmers. Every eligible farmer family is entitled to receive Rs 6000 per year across India. However, the amount is not paid in one go.
Instead, it was divided into three equal instalments and completed four months apart. Thus, every farmer gets Rs 2000 every 4 months. Beneficiaries can use this amount for multiple purposes. The guidelines of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana do not clearly define any usage restrictions.

PMKSNY is a Government of India sponsored Kisan Sahayata Yojana. Therefore, its entire funding comes from the Government of India. Initially, it announced a reserve of Rs 75000 crore per year to spend on this initiative.
It disbursed Rs 17,000 crore in the latest instalment on 9 August 2020 through Direct Benefit Transfer or DBT in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries of the scheme.

Identity Responsibility
While the responsibility of funding rests with the Government of India, the identity of the beneficiaries is not within its purview. Instead, it is the responsibility of the state and union territory governments.
These governments will identify the farmer families to be benefited from this scheme. Here, it is important to note that as per the definition of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, a farmer family shall consist of a husband, wife and minor child or children.

Who is eligible for PM Kisan Yojana?
One of the most important features of this government scheme is its eligibility criteria. Farmer families who fulfil these criteria can be benefited from this scheme:
- Small and marginal farmers are eligible for PMKSNY.
- Farmer families having cultivable land can apply for the benefits of this scheme.
- The beneficiary must be an Indian citizen.
- Also, farmers of both rural and urban areas can be included in the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana. However, its guidelines also exclude certain categories of persons from its beneficiary list.
Who is excluded from PMKSNY?
Not all farmers can avail of monetary assistance under PM Kisan Yojana. These categories of people are mentioned below –
- Any institutional landholder is not eligible for this initiative.
- Farmer households having one or more members fulfilling the following criteria will not be eligible:
- A person holding or holding a constitutional office.
- Persons who have or continue to serve as employees and/or officers in any Government Ministry, Department or Office and its field units.
- Individuals who served as an officer or employee in any Central or State Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) and autonomous bodies under Govt.
- Regular employees of local government bodies.
- Current and former ministers of both the central and state governments.
- Present and former members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
- Present and former members of the State Legislative Assembly and State Legislative Councils.
- Any present or former President of the District Panchayat.
- Present and former mayor of any municipal corporation.
- Any individual who has filed Income Tax in the previous Assessment Year (AY) or his/her family is not eligible to receive Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana.
- An individual and his family who are retired or retired and receives a pension of Rs 10,000 or more per month are excluded from the scheme. However, this is not applicable when such pensioner belongs to Multi-Tasking Staff, Class IV or Group D employees.
- Families having professionals like a doctor, engineers, chartered accountants, lawyers and architects who are professionally involved in the respective fields are also ineligible for the scheme.
How to register for PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?
Individuals who qualify for the scheme as per the criteria mentioned above can register themselves as beneficiaries in the following ways:
- Each state government has to nominate PMKSNY nodal officers. Individuals can contact them to register for this scheme.
- Eligible farmers can also approach local patwaris or revenue officials for registration.
- It is also possible to enrol in the scheme by paying a fee through Common Service Centers (CSCs).
- Apart from these, individuals can also register themselves online for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana through its dedicated portal. First of all, one has to visit the official website of PMKSNY and click on “New Farmer Registration” within the Farmers Corner section.
Farmers who have self-registered and enrolled through CSC can check their PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana status by clicking on the option “Status of Self-Registered / CSC Farmers” under Farmers Corner.
What are the documents required for registration?
While applying as a beneficiary for this scheme, individuals need to submit the following documents:
- Aadhar card
- Proof of citizenship
- Documents confirming ownership of land
- Bank account details
- Individuals will be required to provide scanned copies of such documents if they are registering online.
How to check the beneficiary status of PM Kisan Yojana?
As mentioned earlier, the Government of India pays a minimum income support amount of Rs 6000 per year in three instalments. If any enlisted farmer does not receive the amount as per the stipulated time, then they can check PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana’s status online.
Here are the steps to do so –
- Visit the official website of PMKSNY.
- Click on “Beneficiary Status” under Farmers Corner.
- Enter your Aadhaar number, registered mobile number, or account number.
On providing any of the above numbers, individuals can check the status of their receipt.
Individuals can also check whether they are included in the beneficiary list of their village for this scheme online as well through its portal. For that, these steps need to be followed –
- Click on the list of marked beneficiaries tab under Farmers Corner.
- Select State, District & Sub-District, Block & Village and click on Get Report.
After this one can see the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana list for a particular village. All these are necessary to know about the status of the scheme. Individuals who have not yet enlisted can do so to get the next instalment of Rs. 2000.
